KAVERIT Collection in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki

In the rapidly developing Melkinlaituri area of Jätkäsaari, Helsinki, the BUDDIES/KAVERIT collection has become part of a new residential courtyard designed for shared outdoor life and community gardening.

Developed together with Nomaji landscape architects, the KAVERIT collection was created to bring people closer to nature through practical, durable, and nature-inspired outdoor elements. The collection is particularly well suited to environments where residents are encouraged to spend time outdoors together and take an active role in shaping their surroundings.

The installation in Jätkäsaari includes several HIPPIÄINEN planters together with a VARIS compost bin. Designed specifically for composting garden waste, the compost bin features an open and airy structure with an open bottom that supports natural composting processes. At the same time, its straightforward structure allows residents to adapt it to other communal uses if needed.

The HIPPIÄINEN planters provide opportunities for growing flowers, herbs, vegetables, and other plants while helping to bring greenery into the shared courtyard environment. Available in a range of sizes, they can also be partially or fully covered with wooden lids, allowing them to function as benches when needed. This flexibility enables the same elements to support both gardening and everyday outdoor use. Together, the planters and compost bin create a small but meaningful infrastructure for community gardening and outdoor activity.

As one of Helsinki's newest and fastest-growing neighbourhoods, Jätkäsaari continues to develop its own character and community spirit.
