A Courtyard Designed with Care

IISALMI and the first ABAU Water Fountain at Jakomäki Care Home
The new Jakomäki Care Home in Helsinki is surrounded by an outdoor environment where greenery, accessibility and everyday use come together. The landscape design was created by Nomaji Landscape Architects, who invited ABAU DESIGN to contribute to the project with outdoor furniture and site elements for the courtyard and the areas around the building.
For ABAU DESIGN, Jakomäki has become one of our most comprehensive recent projects. We supplied an extensive range of IISALMI furniture, including benches, two-seater benches, table sets and bike racks, as well as the first installation of our new Water Fountain.
The IISALMI collection creates a consistent design language throughout the outdoor spaces while accommodating different ways of using them. Its clean Nordic character and carefully considered proportions make it particularly well suited to an environment shared by residents, visitors and staff.
Jakomäki also marks an important first for the IISALMI collection: it is the first public project where IISALMI furniture has been produced using recycled plastic.
Selected benches and table sets are made from recycled plastic, while traditional timber IISALMI furniture is used elsewhere in the project. The new material retains the familiar character and proportions of the collection while offering a durable, low-maintenance alternative for demanding outdoor conditions.
Another new element at Jakomäki is the first ABAU DESIGN Water Fountain.
The fountain was developed as more than a visual feature. Designed as a sound beacon, it uses the sound of flowing water to help people orient themselves and locate the entrance. This provides an additional navigational cue for visitors with visual impairments, while selected natural stones in the basin add a tactile element to the experience.
