A classic reborn – timeless design, modern construction

Some benches carry history. Our new 1880 bench was developed in close collaboration with the City of Naantali, as a modernised version of a beloved local classic. The name 1880 is a rare exception in our product range – chosen as a tribute to the year when this bench design first appeared in the city’s archives. It’s a proud dedication to the past, carried forward with respect and craftsmanship.

The city wanted to preserve the familiar form of the original bench, but with improvements that would meet today's technical and maintenance needs. The traditional design had wooden legs, which were difficult to maintain – especially for benches left outdoors during the winter months.

We had the opportunity to create an updated version: one that stays true to the original’s appearance, but with a robust steel frame for improved durability. Additionally, the city requested a new functional feature – a removable seat. The result is a bench where the entire seat can be detached and replaced without removing the steel frame from the ground, making repainting and upkeep fast and efficient.

The steel and wood components can be painted in custom colours, allowing the bench to blend into its surroundings or stand out with intention.

Today, the 1880 benches are installed in the heart of Naantali. Overlooking the bay and surrounded by visitors year-round, this visible, much-loved location is a fitting home for a design that bridges past and present.
