A bespoke seating solution for a renewed playground
In the heart of Töölö – one of Helsinki’s peaceful distinguished neighbourhoods – Linnankosken Park has recently undergone a thorough renovation. The result is a welcoming green space that offers something for everyone: shady trees, generous lawns, and a thoughtfully designed playground where children of all ages can play and explore.
At this playground stands our latest installation – an irregular‑shaped STOORI sandbox with integrated benches. It’s more than just a place for children to play in the sand; it creates a space where parents and caregivers can sit comfortably close by, sharing in the moment while enjoying the surroundings.
The sandbox represents our STOORI modular solutions, ABAU DESIGN’s most adaptable seating concept. STOORI is not a fixed collection but a flexible design language that can be shaped to meet the specific needs of each location. With its steel edging and multiple seating options, STOORI modules can become sandboxes, planters, or seating areas that wrap around trees or follow the edge of a wall. Seating can run continuously around the perimeter, be placed only in certain sections, or even be combined with planters on the corners – each project becomes a unique solution.
In Linnakoski park, the STOORI sandbox shows exactly what this system can do: create something playful and functional that blends with the wider playground design. Its wooden seating elements harmonise with our existing furniture ranges while the robust steel structure ensures long‑lasting durability and easy maintenance.
