ASEMA at Villa Dalby
Grounded Elegance by the Lake
At the edge of Lake Bodom in Espoo lies Villa Dalby, a distinguished Art Nouveau estate that captures the romantic spirit of early 20th-century Finnish architecture. Designed as a country retreat for Professor Julius Ossian Schauman, the villa was built to harmonize with its natural surroundings – a composition of terraces, stone walls, and garden paths unfolding toward the lake. Today, the site remains one of Espoo’s most characterful cultural landmarks, where architectural heritage and the quiet presence of nature coexist.
Within this setting, ABAU DESIGN’s ASEMA benches introduce a contemporary layer that feels both respectful and refreshing. Crafted from pine heartwood and stainless steel, the benches rest atop six stone modules arranged around the villa’s outdoor terrace. Their layout subtly defines the table groups area, forming an open yet protective rhythm that separates it from the nearby road. The result is a cohesive, inviting space that feels grounded in the same spirit of craftsmanship that defines the villa itself.
The ASEMA collection was born from a clear idea: to combine the strength of stone with the warmth of wood, using durable wooden elements across a variety of structural bases – whether stone, concrete, or steel. Inspired by the enduring architecture of stations and city squares, ASEMA balances robustness with quiet refinement, offering a versatile seating solution for both modern and historical environments.
Originally designed for urban use, ASEMA proves its adaptability in tranquil, heritage-rich surroundings like Villa Dalby. With modular construction, customizable dimensions, and a timeless material palette, it brings a sense of continuity wherever it’s placed.
Built to last. Shaped for its surroundings.
