1880-benches, Naantali
Cherished classic, crafted for the future
Some designs stand the test of time – not just in form, but in the memories and meaning they carry. In close collaboration with the City of Naantali, we developed a new version of a historic local bench that has been part of the city’s identity since at least the 1880s, according to archival records.
With its elegant curves and nostalgic silhouette, the original bench was widely loved – but its fully wooden construction, especially the legs, presented durability challenges in year-round outdoor use. The city wanted to preserve the recognisable look and feel of the original, while improving its longevity and maintainability.
We responded with a thoughtful update: a robust steel frame paired with a removable seat, allowing the seating surface to be replaced, repaired or repainted without detaching the frame from the ground. This feature ensures faster maintenance while preserving the visual integrity of the installation.
The updated benches now stand in Siltapuisto, right next to Kirkkopuisto, one of Naantali’s most beloved green spaces. Nestled along the bayfront and near the historic town centre, this is a highly visible and well-visited location – an ideal setting for a bench that bridges tradition and contemporary function.
We’ve added this design to our product range under the name 1880 – a rare, symbolic title chosen to honour the year when the bench first appeared in city documents. It’s a name that reflects not only heritage, but also our dedication to refined craftsmanship and long-lasting public design.
At ABAU DESIGN, we believe in revisiting the classics – not to replicate them, but to extend their life and relevance for generations to come.
