AITTA and STOORI seating for a renewed city centre
Recently renovated Napinkulma Square in the centre of Imatra has gained a new role as a welcoming public space for everyday urban life.
ABAU DESIGN contributed to the project with products from the AITTA collection as well as a custom-designed STOORI bench – the longest STOORI installation realised to date.
Stretching an impressive 21 metres, the bench curves through the square, creating a continuous seating element that helps define the space while providing numerous opportunities to sit, gather, and pause. Its flowing form demonstrates the versatility of the STOORI concept, which allows each installation to be tailored to the specific character and requirements of its environment.
STOORI is ABAU DESIGN's most adaptable seating concept. Rather than a fixed collection, it is a flexible system that combines wooden elements from existing furniture families with a customisable base that can take virtually any shape or size. Whether following a straight line, forming a semi-circle or curve, embracing a tree, or adapting to a unique architectural feature, STOORI is designed to provide just what each environment requires.
Alongside the custom bench, the project includes several AITTA benches with and without backrests. With their sturdy timber construction and nature-inspired design language, they provide durable and comfortable seating while creating a cohesive visual connection with the STOORI installation.
This project demonstrates how custom solutions and standard collections can work together to create distinctive spaces that support everyday life while strengthening the identity of the location. As one of the key public spaces in central Imatra, Napinkulma Square now offers residents a variety of ways to enjoy the city – supported by seating designed to serve the space for years to come.
